When I Couldn’t Say it Out Loud — I Wrote ‘Speech of the Heart‘ Instead.
I worked in animal medicine for 14 years. It was my dream to care for creatures that couldn’t speak for themselves. And it was a dream, but dreams have shadows, too. Clients could be so mean when they couldn’t afford to care for their pets. I got yelled at. Bit. Scratched. I made mistakes. I tried harder. I worked harder. I cried behind the till, in a corner where no camera could see me, after we closed, so I’d have the strength to stand back up and care for the overnight patients. Only to have:
- Low pay.
- Long hours.
- Expensive health insurance.
- Heartbreaks I didn’t get time to process.
- I saw love, loyalty, grief, and endurance on levels most people never imagine.
- I gave all of myself to it.
- Eventually, there wasn’t anything left to give.
After the burnout, I went back to a desk job and was successful… for a few years. Sadly, I’m back to working long hours for little pay and only writing/marketing when I have a few moments alone, when being an author is all I’ve ever wanted to do with my life. Animal rescue was supposed to be my side job while being an author paved the way. Now… Nothing.
So, I wrote Speech of the Heart. It’s a story about an emotionally fractured animal empath who speaks to creatures better than she speaks with people. A girl who, like me, is trying to figure out if healing others is worth it when you’re bleeding yourself dry. It’s not a memoir, but it’s mine.
